BPAY Payments
Australia's electronic bill payment system that lets customers pay invoices and bills from their online banking. Secure, familiar, and trusted by millions of Australians.
What Is BPAY?
BPAY is an Australian electronic bill payment system that enables customers to pay bills and invoices directly from their online banking, mobile banking app, or telephone banking. Launched in the late 1990s, BPAY has become the standard bill payment method in Australia, processing over 100 million transactions annually across more than 45,000 billers.
For merchants, BPAY offers a familiar and trusted payment channel. Every Australian with a bank account can use BPAY without needing to register, download software, or create an account. The system operates on a simple model: each biller (merchant) receives a unique Biller Code, and each customer invoice has a unique Customer Reference Number (CRN). Customers enter these two identifiers in their banking app to make a payment.
How BPAY Works
The BPAY payment flow is designed for simplicity and reliability:
- Biller Registration: The merchant registers as a BPAY biller through their acquiring bank or payment gateway. They receive a unique Biller Code that identifies their business.
- Invoice Generation: When a customer receives a bill or invoice, the merchant includes their Biller Code and a unique Customer Reference Number (CRN) on the invoice. The CRN allows the merchant to identify which customer and invoice the payment is for.
- Customer Payment: The customer logs into their online banking, selects "BPAY," enters the Biller Code and CRN, and confirms the payment amount. The customer can choose to pay immediately or schedule a future payment date.
- Processing & Settlement: The customer's bank sends the payment through the BPAY network. Standard BPAY payments settle to the merchant's bank account in 2 to 3 business days. BPAY View (electronic bill presentment) offers faster settlement.
- Reconciliation: The merchant receives a payment report from their acquiring bank or gateway, including the CRN, amount, and payment date. This enables automated reconciliation against outstanding invoices.
