PayID Payments
Real-time Australian bank transfers using a simple identifier instead of BSB and account numbers. Instant settlement, lower fees, and ideal for Australian merchants.
What Is PayID?
PayID is an Australian instant payment service that allows customers to send real-time bank transfers using a simple identifier such as a phone number, email address, or ABN instead of traditional BSB and account numbers. Launched as part of the New Payments Platform (NPP) by the Australian Payments Network, PayID enables payments that settle in seconds, 24/7, including weekends and public holidays.
For merchants, PayID represents a significant upgrade over traditional bank transfers. Rather than asking customers to manually enter long BSB and account number combinations that are prone to error, you can provide a simple PayID like "[email protected]" or a mobile number. The payment is processed in real time, and funds are available immediately.
How PayID Works
The PayID payment flow is straightforward for both merchants and customers:
- Registration: The merchant registers a PayID (email, phone, or ABN) with their acquiring bank. This PayID is linked to the merchant's bank account in the NPP database.
- Customer Checkout: At checkout, the merchant displays their PayID. The customer opens their banking app, selects "Pay to PayID," and enters the identifier.
- Real-Time Verification: The NPP resolves the PayID to the linked bank account and displays the merchant's registered name for confirmation. This step prevents misdirected payments.
- Instant Settlement: The customer confirms the payment. Funds move from the customer's account to the merchant's account in seconds, typically within 30 to 60 seconds.
- Merchant Notification: The merchant receives an immediate notification via their payment gateway or banking portal. Funds are available for use or withdrawal instantly.
Benefits for Merchants
- Instant Settlement Funds are available immediately, not in T+1 or T+2 like card payments. This dramatically improves cash flow.
- 24/7 Availability PayID works around the clock, including weekends, public holidays, and after hours. No waiting for business days.
- Lower Fees PayID transactions typically cost a flat fee of $0.10 to $0.50 per payment, far less than the 1.5% to 3% charged by credit card networks.
- No Chargebacks PayID payments, being initiated by the customer from their own banking app, carry no chargeback risk. Once sent, the transaction is final.
- No PCI Compliance No card data touches your systems. PayID significantly reduces your PCI DSS compliance burden.
- Reduced Errors Customers can't mistype BSB or account numbers. The NPP validates the PayID against the registered name at the time of payment.
Use Cases
PayID is particularly well-suited for these merchant scenarios:
- E-commerce and online stores serving Australian customers who prefer direct bank transfers over credit cards.
- Invoice payments and B2B transactions where instant settlement and lower fees improve cash flow and margins.
- High-risk merchants in industries like CBD, forex, and nutraceuticals who struggle with card network restrictions.
- Service businesses such as freelancers, consultants, and tradespeople who want immediate payment after completing work.
- Deposit and lay-by models where customers pay a deposit via PayID and settle the balance later.
- Marketplace platforms facilitating payments between buyers and sellers in Australia.
Regions / Availability
PayID is exclusively available in Australia. It is built on the New Payments Platform (NPP), which is an Australian infrastructure developed by the Australian Payments Network. Only Australian bank accounts can send and receive PayID payments.
All major Australian banks support PayID, including Commonwealth Bank, Westpac, NAB, ANZ, Bendigo Bank, Bank of Queensland, and many credit unions and neobanks. Merchants need a business bank account at an NPP-connected bank to receive PayID payments. Payment gateway providers like WebPayMe can integrate PayID into your checkout flow, automatically generating PayID payment requests and reconciling incoming transfers.
