PIX Payments
Brazil's revolutionary instant payment system. PIX settles in seconds, operates 24/7, and has been adopted by over 70% of Brazilian adults. Essential for merchants serving the Brazilian market.
What Is PIX?
PIX is Brazil's instant payment system, launched in November 2020 by the Central Bank of Brazil (Banco Central do Brasil). It enables real-time electronic payments between Brazilian bank accounts, payment institutions, and fintechs, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. PIX was designed to modernize Brazil's payment infrastructure, reduce cash dependency, and promote financial inclusion.
Since its launch, PIX has become one of the most successful instant payment systems in the world. Over 70% of the Brazilian adult population has used PIX, and it processes more than 3 billion transactions per month. For merchants, PIX is no longer optional — it is an essential payment method for any business serving Brazilian consumers.
How PIX Works
The PIX payment flow is designed for speed and convenience:
- Merchant Generates QR Code: At checkout, the merchant's payment gateway generates a dynamic PIX QR code or a PIX copy-paste code (a text string). This code contains the merchant's PIX key, the payment amount, and a unique transaction identifier.
- Customer Scans or Copies: The customer opens their banking app or digital wallet, scans the QR code with their phone camera, or pastes the copy-paste code. The app displays the merchant's name, payment amount, and a confirmation screen.
- Instant Settlement: The customer confirms the payment. The funds move from the customer's account to the merchant's account in seconds — typically 5 to 15 seconds. The Central Bank's PIX infrastructure processes and settles the transaction in real time.
- Merchant Notification: The merchant receives an instant webhook or API notification from their payment gateway. The order is confirmed, and goods or services can be released immediately.
- Final and Irreversible: Once settled, PIX payments cannot be reversed (except by court order in cases of proven fraud). There is no chargeback mechanism.
Benefits for Merchants
- Instant Settlement Funds are available in seconds, dramatically improving cash flow. No T+1 or T+2 waiting periods.
- Near-Ubiquitous Adoption Over 70% of Brazilian adults use PIX. Not accepting PIX means excluding the majority of Brazilian consumers.
- Very Low Fees PIX transaction fees are typically 0% to 0.5% per transaction, far below credit card interchange fees of 2.5% to 4%.
- No Chargebacks PIX is irreversible. No chargeback disputes, no representment costs, no fraud liability for merchants.
- 24/7 Operation PIX works 24/7/365, including weekends, holidays, and overnight. No scheduling constraints.
- No PCI Scope PIX uses banking credentials and QR codes, not card data. PCI DSS compliance requirements are minimal.
- High Approval Rates Unlike credit cards, PIX has no risk-based denials, insufficient credit issues, or card network restrictions.
Use Cases
PIX is essential for these merchant scenarios:
- E-commerce stores targeting Brazilian consumers — PIX is the preferred payment method for online shopping in Brazil, often surpassing credit cards in transaction volume.
- Digital goods and services — Instant payment confirmation enables immediate delivery of digital products, subscriptions, and access credentials.
- High-risk merchants serving Brazilian customers who cannot obtain or maintain card processing due to industry restrictions.
- Retail and point-of-sale — PIX QR codes at physical checkout counters offer a fast, cashless payment option.
- B2B payments — PIX is increasingly used for business-to-business payments in Brazil, offering instant settlement.
- Gaming and iGaming — Brazilian gaming operators rely heavily on PIX for player deposits and withdrawals.
- Marketplaces — PIX enables instant settlement for marketplace sellers, improving their cash flow.
Regions / Availability
PIX is exclusively available in Brazil. Both the sending and receiving parties must hold accounts at Brazilian financial institutions (banks, payment institutions, or fintechs registered with the Central Bank of Brazil). PIX transactions are denominated in Brazilian Real (BRL).
International merchants can accept PIX by partnering with a Brazilian payment gateway or acquiring partner. WebPayMe can help you integrate PIX payments through our network of Brazilian processing partners, enabling you to accept BRL-denominated PIX payments from Brazilian consumers.
